Progress of one of the houses that the team of 16 Australians got to build outside of Phnom Penh this July. All this happened over the course of 6 days, and would have been finished with a couple of days more in Cambodia.

Cost? $2500 for land and $1800 for a house; all potential home owners through Habitat need to have a proven savings history, and will repay the loan at $30 a month – tricky when your monthly income is $150 or so. And you have not just your immediate family to feed, but the extended family all under your roof.

These Melbourne guys, Lushe, are creating something special. Vertical gardens aren’t new by any means, but if you look closely, this is Van Gogh’s ‘A wheatfield, with cypresses’ in vertical garden art. Currently outside St Martin in the Fields in London – go check it out if you’re there.

A touch of Robin Boyd in suburban Canberra – a 6 unit development using double height spaces and a common driveway – cars are parked away from the terrace style dwellings. It’s not imperative that car parking is not immediately adjacent to the house – encourage a bit of community connectivity as you carry your shopping from the car to the house!

Here’s a service that is becoming increasingly necessary – what can you do on a block of land BEFORE you purchase it?

As an architect at Brutal Art Design + Build, we provide a Property Development Assessment, where we can assess the restrictions and opportunities for your site, given council requirements (strategy and policy), State Government Planning Policy, utility locations, neighbourhood precedent, size of land, etc, and provide you with estimated returns analysis for your potential development. Some clients come to us before purchasing a property, and make their decision of whether to proceed based on our Property Development Assessment.

If you need this done on a Saturday, however, during any open for inspections, you can hire me to follow you around for the day or for a few hours. I will assess each property, have a look at them, and write up a report based on the above mentioned restrictions and list the opportunities also. That’s value for money, I say – by the end of the weekend, we’ll pinpoint which properties are most likely to get through council and which are really quite difficult to develop or renovate, and thus not worth your money or time.

Why do I do this? Because I want the best outcome for our clients, I want them to have the most amount of information to make an educated decision on purchasing their property. We get building inspections done to assess the existing conditions – why don’t we get architectural inspections done to assess the OPPORTUNITIES? The building industry is such a maze of people looking out for their own lot; I want to change that to guide clients through the convoluted and archaic building practices in Australia, having their best interests at heart.

And if you need anyone to follow through with the project through to design, town planning application, detail drawings, construction and realisation – well, we provide all those services at Brutal Art.

Email me esther@socialarchitect.com.au, and we’ll have a chat and figure out a quote for the service.

As a qualified architect and landscape design student, I’m offering a Landscape Design service for any residential projects in metropolitan Melbourne, starting from a base fee of $500 a pop, depending on the scale of the project. Generally, this design service is for town planning application purposes, however, I am in contact with many landscape gardeners and tradies, and can recommend some names should you wish to proceed with the construction of the design.

So what does $500 get you?

  • a site visit from me
  • a distillation of your brief
  • a concept plan drawn up – either sketched or CAD-ded up
  • delivery of the Landscape Plan via email in PDF format

Here’s how I design:

  • architectural spatial characteristics – a usable garden where you have outdoor rooms and different spaces to experience in your garden
  • work to your brief – let’s achieve a mutual positive outcome!
  • always always always use species of plants native to Australia
  • recommend low water usage with plant selection, mulch and irrigation specification
  • use of plants local to the area, if your council has a recommended plant list
  • design to achieve a town planning permit – work with the council to achieve their goals for a mutual benefit

If this is a service you’re interested in, email me esther@socialarchitect.com.au, and let’s have a chat and we’ll figure out a quote. Would love the opportunity to design your sustainable garden with you!
